BIOGRAPHY
Alastair Philip Wiper is a photographer and creative director whose work digs into the beauty, logic and absurdity of how humans build. His images — industrial, scientific, architectural — are defined by precision, symmetry and a dry sense of humour. He focuses on the machines, systems and infrastructures we create, and what they reveal about our needs, desires and questions about the universe.
He works commercially with brands such as Google and Nike, and his editorial clients include Wired, Vice, Scientific American and The Guardian. His prints are held in the collections of the Design Museum, London; the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA); and Bank Vontobel, Zurich.
He has published several books, including Building Stories (Danish Architectural Press, 2023), Unintended Beauty (Hatje Cantz, 2020) and The Art of Impossible (Thames & Hudson, 2015). His solo exhibitions include shows at the Royal Institute of British Architects in London and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design (MADD) in Bordeaux.
He is based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
“There is something curiously and unexpectedly satisfying about Alastair Philip Wiper's images of factories, laboratories and industrial facilities. These are places that, by definition, prioritize function over form. Yet, their colors, textures, symmetrical patterns and converging lines reveal a surprising -- if entirely accidental -- beauty.” - Oscar Holland, CNN
“Wiper’s photos (are) more than just eye candy. They expose viewers to the surprisingly stunning processes that meet their daily needs and desires—and in the process, might inspire them to think more deeply about their own consumption.” - Laura Malonee, Wired
Recent interviews and press about Alastair’s work can be found on Hypebeast, CNN, Dezeen, Wired, Frame and Designboom.
