Embassy of Denmark, London / by Alastair Wiper

The Danish Embassy in London opened in 1977 and was designed by renowned Danish Architect Arne Jacobsen. The purpose-built embassy on Sloane Street was intended to respect the surrounding buildings while creating a contemporary building. It was originally painted a light sand yellow colour, which would have blended in a lot better than the brutal grey it was repainted to at a later stage. The top floors of the building, which house the ambassador’s residence, are set back from the rest of the building to fit in better with the surrounding buildings. After Jacobsen’s death in 1971, the design was continued by the practice under the name of Dissing+Weitling and the first stones were laid by Queen Margarethe II in 1975.
